Two probashi Bengalis, one stubborn craving

Like many Bengalis who live away from home, we - Tanmay Roy and Neha Roy - know the particular ache of a kitchen that's missing the things that make it Bengali. Living outside West Bengal, we found it surprisingly hard to get good-quality Bengali groceries. The few places that did stock them either charged steep prices or piled on heavy shipping costs.

Then the COVID lockdowns arrived, and getting anything delivered home became harder still. That everyday struggle turned into a simple resolve: there had to be a better way for probashi Bengalis - those of us living away from home, to get the food we grew up with.

So we built the thing we wished existed. A place where you could order your favourite Bengali groceries easily, at fair prices, with free shipping - no steep markups, no hassle. That idea became BanglaLocal. We started small, but the need was real and word spread. By December last year, we had delivered over 15,000 orders to Bengali kitchens across India.

What hasn't changed is how we work. We procure most of our products directly from the manufacturers, farmers and artisans who make them - Gobindobhog rice from Bardhaman, nolen gur in winter, stone-ground spices, hand-tied dal bori - so the taste and quality you remember is never compromised, and the price stays fair.
